Escape maps are essential in any home safety checklist

Making a home safety checklist is important. There is no generic home safety checklist. The type of home and individuals in that home are what determines the checklist you need. This guide will give you some idea for your home safety list. A home safety meeting should be held once a month with the entire family to review the home safety list.

Home Safety Checklists

House or apartment, here are items for every home safety checklist.

  • Never leave the kitchen while cooking for home safety.
  • Make a fire escape map with two ways to leave every room.
  • Set a rendezvous point a safe distance outside the home.
  • Install fire and smoke alarms near or inside every bedroom for home safety in fires.
  • Learn the use of a fire extinguisher. Keep one in the kitchen for home safety in fires.
  • Make sure hot water heaters are set on medium to avoid water burns.
  • Enforce no smoking anywhere in your home for home safety and good health.

If your home has more than one level, add these to your home safety checklist.

  • Keep stairways clear and clean at all times.
  • Have lights at the top and bottom of all stairs.
  •  Have handrails from top to bottom and on both sides of stairs.
  • Have at least one fire escape ladder for each level of the home.
  • Have emergency numbers posted on each level, near phones.
  • Always tape rugs to floors and on stairways

For children under 1 year old in your home, add these to your home safety checklist.

  • Have children sleep in cribs on their back.
  • Remove pillows or fluffs and toys from the crib.
  • Store anything smaller than the circle your thumb and second finger makes,
  • Remove window blind cords by cutting at bottom. Keep out of reach.
  • Install safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs.
  • Have child safe, yet easy to remove, window stops.
  • Always use safety straps on chairs, change tables and strollers.
  • Lock bathrooms at all times or put toilet lid locks on seats.
  • NEVER leave babies alone in or near water, never!

If you have adults over 65 years old living at home, add these to your home safety list.

  • Have an alarm service or alarm necklace to call help in case of falls.
  • Control locations of medicines at all times.
  • Have first aid kits on each level.

If you have an attached garage add these to your home safety list.

  • Never bring gasoline in the home. Keep in garage in child safe safety containers.
  • Keep garage tidy with tools high on the walls, especially those with long handles.

There are many areas of danger in the average home. This is a good start for your home safety list, keep your eyes open for safety and be safety aware at all times.
